Fran Skiles – “Sitting Bird Series I” – Original Mixed-Media Collage – Signed – 34 x 21”
Offered is a distinctive original mixed-media collage attributed to Fran Skiles, titled “Sitting Bird Series I.”
The artwork is signed on the reverse, with the signature of Fran Skiles, and the reverse is additionally handwritten “Sitting Bird Series I.”
Research into the artist and the work has produced a particularly interesting connection to Fran Skiles’s documented career. In an interview with Alegre Retreat, Skiles described a series of works created in 2003 consisting of at least ten pieces, all incorporating imagery related to a bird or nest. She also described her “skins” as layered constructions incorporating paper, cloth, paint, gesso, ink, pencil, stitching, embroidery and medium. The construction and imagery of this piece are consistent with that description.
Skiles is an established American mixed-media artist who began with art quilting before developing her distinctive mixed-media collage paintings. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and she has been represented by galleries including Pryor Fine Art and Edgewater Gallery.
The artwork is highly tactile and layered. The upper portion incorporates a bird-like circular form and drawing/graphic elements, while the lower portion consists of a dramatically darker mixed-media composition with additional imagery, marks, paper elements and surface treatments.
The reverse provides particularly useful provenance information, including the handwritten series title and signature.
CONDITION
The artwork is being sold in as-found condition and has substantial surface and edge wear.
There are creases, wrinkles, abrasions, discoloration, staining, scratches, tears and losses along portions of the paper edges. The surface contains extensive layering, adhered/found materials, marks and remnants consistent with the mixed-media construction. The reverse also shows substantial wear and remnants from previous mounting/display.
The piece is fragile and should be handled carefully.
