Established in 1840 by Stockmann, Punch is one of the oldest Cuban cigar brands, named after the 19th-century Punch and Judy puppet character, Mr. Punch.
Originally targeting the British market, the brand gained prominence under Manuel López Fernández, whose name remains on Cuban boxes today, and later became a respected Habanos SA product.
Following the Cuban Revolution, production split into a Cuban-made version and a popular Honduran-made brand for the US market.
Key Historical Milestones
1840: Founding: Registered by a German named Stockmann in Cuba, aiming for the British market. The name refers to the popular European puppet character, not the later satirical magazine.
1874–1884: Early Ownership Changes: Bought by Luis Corujo in 1874, then in 1884 by Manuel López Fernández.
The 1929 Crash & New Ownership: After López retired, the company was hit by the Great Depression, leading to its sale in 1930 to Fernández, Palicio y Cía, who expanded its international popularity.
Post-Revolution Shift: After 1959, the Cuban government nationalized the brand. However, the brand was recreated for the US market by Frank Llaneza of Villazon & Co. in Honduras, leading to the two separate entities—Cuban and Honduran—that exist today.
The Brand Icon
The Punch brand has consistently used the character of "Mr. Punch" from the Punch and Judy puppet shows. The character is famously depicted as a cheerful,, hook-nosed puppet smoking a cigar, often adorned with expensive jewelry, symbolizing a luxurious, yet approachable experience
