This antique Mayan temple carving is a one-of-a-kind statue made from ocean shale stone. Handmade in Guatemala, this statue stands at 44.5 inches tall and is 17 inches long with a width of 15.5 inches. The carving of the statue depicts a figure in the Mayan style, and it is a perfect addition to any art collection.

The statue is a unique piece of art that showcases the ancient Mayan culture. The production technique of the statue is carving, and it is a handmade artifact. This statue is perfect for those who appreciate the beauty and complexity of ancient civilizations.

All the information about this item came from the previous owner, and at ancient, artifact appraiser. I consulted, although no written appraisal was done. The following is what they told me about it:

it most likely represented a ball player. that would have been the only other person the Mayans would have carved a statue of.

The Mayan ball game goes back three thousand five hundred years. It is the first organized game in the history of sports. The Mayans loved the game and played it as just a game with ball teams from different villages. There was lots of gambling and just like our sports games today lots of team spirit. This is the area I believe your part of the statue came from.

The other type of ball game played was the city rulers against captive warriors. This was a spectacle and a ritual. The captives always lost and were sacrificed.

Unfortunately there are thirteen hundred ball courts in Mesoamerica from Mayan times. There are five hundred of these courts in Guatemala, home of the earliest Mayan cities.

I believe your statue came from Guatemala.

The statue is made out of shale which would have been soft enough to carve easily. Shale is the soft mud from the lakes, ocean that over thousands of years of layers building up trapping the marine life and compacting, became shale. There are usually large deposits of shale near the beaches and large lakes.

Your statue was carved from 500 bc to 250 Ad.
