Extremely large statue carved out of one piece of wood and stands approximately 80 inches tall.
It has some stress cracks in the base and a few other places you can see in the pictures and one small piece of wood missing in the back otherwise in remarkable condition for its size and age. Very common to find smaller more modern replicas but virtually impossible to find one this size that has survived.
Definitely a statement piece in any home setting and a conversation starter in any home or collection.
BAULE
The Baule carving style is one of the most recognizable in all of African art. Baule woodworkers in the Ivory Coast carve collectable colonial figures, maternity and spirit spouses. Samples from Bolo, Bian, Anyi Attye and so many more.
The Baule are one of the Akan peoples. They moved west to the Ivory Coast more than 200 years ago and adopted sculptural and masking traditions from their neighbors, the Guro, Senufo and Yaure peoples.
Baule figures can be among the most elegant and designed pieces in Africa. Many show careful execution of face, coiffure and scarification details, with refined forms but no loss of expressiveness and power. The quiet, dignified figures embody spirits from the other world. They functioned as the home of a spirit to whom sacrifices were made and had to be placated with care. Asye usu figures were the abode of spirits associated with diviners. In ritual performances, the spirit would come out to possess the diviner, causing a trance. The display of the figures would enhance and support the ensuing dance.
Small figures include the roughly carved bo usu that helped with hunting.
The more refined blolo bla (spirit wife) and blolo bian (spirit husband) figures, if well taken care of, helped their human partners in all areas of life.

Combined shipping: We do combine shipping on multiple purchases. A combined invoice will be sent on multiple purchases. International buyers: International buyers, we use the Ebay Global Shipping program. This means either you need to combine the items on your end for multiple items or pay for each of the items separately and when sent to Ebay’s Global Shipping center we will refund a portion of the shipping overages. We CANNOT combine shipping on our end and will not use any other form of shipping. We do not control import fees or taxes. The Global Shipping Program already provides your buyer with an invoice for all applicable item, shipping, and import charges. Unfortunately, you can't edit these charges, even to offer a shipping discount. When your buyer pays, just ship the item to the US shipping center specified, and the Global Shipping Program will forward it to the buyer. Your buyer will directly pay you the purchase price of the item, plus any domestic shipping cost you specified in the listing.
Item Description and Condition: Please see an item specifics for condition and details. We run over 3000 auctions at all times and descriptions may appear minimal but we are very happy to answer any questions you may have as long as you ask them BEFORE committing to buy the item or making offers. Do not ask questions within the offer. Items may differ slightly from the photo if they are part of a multiple listing or have been re-listed. If you are unsure of anything please ask BEORE buying. We do not answer questions after the item is paid for as the item will have already been sent to our shipping dept to be sent out.
Item Packaging: We do not guarantee the condition of any packaging on any item. If an item is described as new it is the item inside the packaging we are describing not the packaging, new means the packaging has not been opened and the item inside is unused. If a package has dings, creases or crushed bubbles we will do our best to indicate as such, however, view the photos provided and any questions please ask BEFORE making an offer or purchase.
Payment: We only accept payments through Ebay. Please pay within 2 days. Unpaid item reminders will be automatically sent after 2 days. If waiting for additional items to end, payment is expected within 5 days of the first ended item.
Shipping: Items are usually shipped the day after payment with the exception of items paid on Fri/Sat/Sun which are then usually shipped Mon or Tue. A tracking number will be provided once we pack and look to ship the item.
Returns: We do accept returns, please contact us as soon as possible stating the reason you wish to return the item. Apart from exceptional circumstances we do not pay for return postage or refund initial postage costs.
Blocked Buyers: In some rare instances we need to block buyers from making offers or purchases. This could be for various reason such as non payment of previous items, multiple cancellations, insulting offers, difficult communications, or rude remarks to us or our staff. In these rare instances we will not allow purchases or offers and will not communicate with the buyer once blocked
